I got to work at 8, to be met by my coworker outside the building, who explained that due to the storms and 70-mph winds last night, the area had no power, the campus was closed until 10, and would I like to go get breakfast somewhere? So I did. We got back at 9, by which time the power was restored, and the library is filling up with students who would normally be in class now and who came to campus to find their classes cancelled or rescheduled.

And I didn't hear a thing last night, so the storm can't have been too bad over near my apartment.

Just finished listening to rachelmanija's interview about her book on Writers on Writing. It was quite interesting, and my connection didn't even go on the fritz until near the end, after the important part*, so I only missed about ten minutes of it, due to the connection dropping, establishing, dropping, and establishing over and over.

They're sort-of archiving various broadcasts of the show, but only up to last June or July. It'll probably be up eventually

At the bar at the Ycon htel, taking advabtage of the free wireless connection, since the highspeed connection in the room isn't working.

Man, it's a hoot lostening to the guys trying to put the moves on women here. There's no con people ehre - they're normal businesspeople hanging out in the bar hoping to score. There's a guy working on a blonde right across from me, and I predict that they'll go up to one room or the other together if he doens't fuck uo - she seems to be quite into him right now. Although not perfectly - her legs are crossed and her hands are clasped in front of here, although she is turned towards him. He's got a bit of work to do. He's totally into her, though - his body is completely turned towards here, sitting sideways in his chair.

Ah. Her hands are unclasped. She's still not turned completely towards him, though. She's talking to him animatedly, though.

Bizarre dream last night.

I dreamed that I was presented with an award - a small trophy-type thing - apparently as a co-award with this guy for a book on manga. The award was delivered to me when I was standing talking to someone I knew at a table outside somewhere. However, I couldn't figure out what the award was really for, because I hadn't actually collaborated with the guy. I had these online essays, sure, but the award was definitely for this book. So I went to the library where they were (I think) going to have the awards ceremony (no I don't know why I got the award itself before the ceremony) only to find that not only was the book itself in French, but the ceremony was in French and the program for it was in French, and all the people milling about the library before the ceremony spoke only French. I don't actually speak or read French, in case you hadn't figured that out by now. And a minimum of research showed that not only was I not a co-author on the book (although you'd think I'd remember that), I wasn't even mentioned in the index. I poked about the black-and-white plates in the middle of the book, which looked familiar, and then I realized that I'd helped the guy in the slide library I worked in a while back, pulling slides for him of images that he used to illustrate something or other about perspective (not manga images, they seemed to be French engravings of some sort). And I couldn't figure out why that was so important that it rated an award alongside the author of the book.

And then I woke up to discover my cat, who normally hates to sleep on the bed, was actually sitting next to me purring, so I scritched her for a while and forgot about the dream until just now.

Something really nice: deciding to blow off anything useful and pamper yourself because you're coming down with something, so sitting on the sofa with popcorn and the cat curled up against your feet, watching The Bodyguard from Beijing, which has a lot of Jet Li.

Until the cat gets offended that you dare allow her - nay, FORCE her - to sniff a piece of popcorn and stalks off indignantly to contemplate eating your shoes, and you realize that there is way too much romance and not enough of either kung fu or gun fu in the movie.
